    Trainer Saeed bin Suroor and jockey Frankie Dettori combined to land a memorable double with Aspectoflove completing the brace when scoring in the featured Group Two Cape Verdi.

    Meydan Racecourse sees Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa as the sponsor of Thursday's second meeting of the 2011 Dubai International Racing Carnival, highlighted by the Cape Verdi, a Group Two 1600m contest for fillies and mares. It is the penultimate event on the all Thoroughbred seven race card and has attracted a quality field of 11.

    Deem won this in 2009, at Nad Al Sheba, for Saudi Arabia and was also a Meydan winner in 2010.

    His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's Derrinstown Stud were the generous sponsors of Friday's Listed Jebel Ali Stakes but the owner's famous blue and white silks were denied victory when his Haatheq was caught close home.

    The first Dubai International Carnival meeting, sponsored by Longines, saw the Group Three Thoroughbred Al Maktoum Challenge Round I won in scintillating fashion by Mendip.

    Trained by Saeed bin Suroor, the winner was partnered by Frankie Dettori in the 1600m All-Weather feature and the pair always looked likely to prevail. Dettori was delighted: "That was a really nice effort in a good contest; he travelled so strongly and quickened very well. We will bring him back for Round II."

    The opening round of the Arabian Triple Crown, a Listed event for four year olds only, over 1600m, is the official feature at Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening on a very interesting six race card.‬‬

    It features a re-match of the course and distance Abu Dhabi Championship first and second Frynchman and Aqmaar, who also finished 1-2 in a maiden at the second meeting back in November.

    It will be something of a surprise if anything beats them and Frynchman looks certain to be a hot Pick Six favourite.
