ERA Media Release - Mr Majed Al Jahouri

ERA Stewards concluded an inquiry on the Tuesday 7th March 2017, into reports received from the Equine Forensic Unit that the post-race urine samples taken from the following horses trained by Mr. Majed Al Jahouri were all found to have a concentration of cobalt in excess of 100 micrograms per litre in urine:
• SHATEH (FR), after it competed in and won Race 1 “Longines Passion in Equestrian – Bani Yas Group 2)” over 1400 metres at Meydan on Thursday 1st December 2016,
• NAHEE (FR), after it competed in Race 4 “Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Group 3” over 1600 metres at Abu Dhabi on Sunday 4th December 2016, and
• AJJAJ (FR), after it competed in and won Race 2 “Mezied Handicap” over 2000 metres at Al Ain on Saturday 10th December 2016.

Trainer Mr. Al Jahouri pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of ERA Rule 95AAA 2, in that he presented and raced SHATEH (FR) in Race 1, “Longines Passion in Equestrian – Bani Yas Group 2)”, (1400 metres) at Meydan on Thursday 1st December 2016, which was subsequently found, upon analysis of a post-race urine sample, to have had cobalt administered to it, as evidenced by a concentration of cobalt in excess of 100 micrograms per litre in urine.

Mr. Al Jahouri also pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of ERA Rule 95AAA 2, in that he presented and raced NAHEE (FR) in Race 4, “Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup Group 3”, (1600 metres) at Abu Dhabi on Sunday 4th December 2016, which was subsequently found, upon analysis of a post-race urine sample, to have had cobalt administered to it, as evidenced by a concentration of cobalt in excess of 100 micrograms per litre in urine.

Mr. Al Jahouri further pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of ERA Rule 95AAA 2, in that he presented and raced AJJAJ (FR) in Race 2, “Mezied Handicap”, (2000 metres) at Al Ain on Saturday 10th December 2016, which was subsequently found, upon analysis of a post-race urine sample, to have had cobalt administered to it, as evidenced by a concentration of cobalt in excess of 100 micrograms per litre in urine.

In determining the appropriate penalty in this case, the Stewards considered a number of factors including:
• The circumstances of the offence;
• The seriousness of the offence, involving the presentation of cobalt above the threshold level in three horses;
• General and specific deterrence;
• The integrity and image of racing;
• Mr. M Al Jahouri’s guilty plea and poor record in regard to the prohibited substance rule.

Mr. M Al Jahouri was disqualified for a period of three (3) years on each charge. Stewards directed under the provisions of ERA Rule 3A(ii) that these penalties are to be served concurrently, commencing Wednesday 11th January 2017, the date on which he commenced a previous prohibited substance disqualification, and expiring midnight Saturday 11th January 2020.

Pursuant to ERA Rule 86(ii), SHATEH (FR) was disqualified as the winner of Race 1 “Longines Passion in Equestrian – Bani Yas Group 2” at Meydan on Thursday 1st December 2016 and the placings adjusted to:
