Periander and Topclass snag the feature events in Abu Dhabi's final racemeeting of the season

Abu Dhabi staged their final meeting of the campaign, the penultimate one of the UAE season, on Sunday evening and featuring the Group One Emirates Championship for Purebred Arabians and the Thoroughbred equivalent, the Group Three Abu Dhabi Championship.

Both races are over 2200m and Periander, winner of the Purebred Arabian race, could yet be seen at Meydan on Saturday, Dubai World Cup day.

Trained by Gill Duffield, he prevailed in a photograph on this occasion to the delight of connections and jockey Adrie De Vries who said: "He is a really nice horse and we have always known that. He made a very good local debut before disappointing on his subsequent start. He could run next week but will go back to Europe before returning here next season."

Topclas has always had plenty of ability and opened his UAE account in the Group Three Thoroughbred race over the same course and distance.

Trained by Mubarak bin Shafya, he was settled well off the fast early pace by Pat Cosgrave before challenging 400m out, sweeping to the front 150m out and running on strongly.

Cosgrave said: "He is a grand horse with plenty of ability who has been running well at the Carnival. He really deserved to win one and it is great he has."

Jockey Richard Mullen was in double form and partnered the Saifaldin Deeb-trained Najem Al Khalij to victory in the 1400m handicap before winning the 1600m conditions race on Sarabella for Tony Manuel.

Champion Jockey Tadhg O'Shea kept his title defence alive with victory on the Jaber Bittar-trained Ragdan in the opening 1200m conditions race, while Timadit Al Mels won the final race of the Abu Dhabi season, a 2200m conditions race.

Trained by Ridha ben Attia, he was ridden by Royston Ffrench who said, succinctly: "What a great way to end the Abu Dhabi season."
