Snaafy snaps up Jebel Ali Mile

Sponsored by Shadwell Farm, the American arm of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum's breeding empire, the Listed Jebel Ali Mile was the 1600m feature at Jebel Ali on Friday afternoon.

Postponed a week earlier due to a sandstorm, it was won in great style by Snaafy, ridden by Richard Hills for his main employer, the sponsor Sheikh Hamdan.

Hills always looked confident on the seven year old and once he took him to the front 300m out he was never going to be caught. He is trained by Musabah Al Muhairi, as is the runner-up Atlantic Brave and the jubilant handler led both runners in together.

Racing manager Ali Al Muhairi said: "We know the horse likes Jebel Ali and had a big chance but he has won that nicely. Richard said he was always confident and the horse picked up well. We will have to go back to the Dubai International Racing Carnival now and he does seem better on Turf than [the All-weather] at Meydan."

Jockey and owner were celebrating a double after Serhaal won the opening 1200m for Champion Trainer Ali Rashid Al Raihe.

Racecourse owner Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was also able to celebrate a double with Kieren Fallon wearing his famous yellow silks to victory on Mannjal in the concluding 1200m handicap and earlier Dahteer in a 1400m handicap.

Both could be described as course specialists with Mannjal winning here for the eighth time and Dahteer the fifth.

They are trained by Dhruba Selvaratnam who said: "We have given Mannjal a break and freshened him up after his two previous runs this season. It seems to have worked. Dahteer has been running well without much luck and deserved that victory."

Another horse earning a deserved win was Lord Ego, winner of a second 1400m handicap under Pat Dobbs for trainer Doug Watson. The 1800m handicap went to Submariner, ridden by Carlos Sandoval for Abdulla bin Huzaim.
