Shortly after the start TEST THE REST (USA) (M Hills) threw its head losing ground. XALOC BAY (IRE) (S Sanders) jumped inwards at the start bumping with KING'S SECRET (USA) (C Gannon). Near the 300m SHAHEYN (USA) (P Smith) shifted in carrying PARA GLIDER (FR) (R Hills) inwards. This caused QUICKNAP (USA) (J Murtagh) to be eased. SHAHEYN (USA) continued to shift in and crowded PARA GLIDER (FR) near the 50m causing it to bump the hindquarters of ARCHIVE (USA) (T Naughton). On enquiry P Smith (SHAHEYN (USA)) was severely reprimanded for failing to straighten his mount when it shifted inwards. W Smith reported that BLAZING ABILITY (USA) felt bad in its action and blundered on several occasions mid-race. A veterinary inspection of BLAZING ABILITY (USA) revealed nothing amiss.

On straightening BIOGRAPHER (USA) (J Murtagh) shifted out bumping ETHMAAR (USA) (R Hills). Jockey A Whelan was questioned as to the reason he was so far back on BLUE DIAMOND (FR). He stated that it was horse's first start over 2400m and he had endeavoured to allow it to settle rearward. He was of the opinion that BLUE DIAMOND (FR) had failed to stay. DISTINCTIVE STATE (GB) (W Supple) was later ascertained to have a fracture to its near fore. Trainer Mr McLaughlin was fined AED 250 under ERA 50 (iv) for the incorrect colours on DISTINCTIVE STATE (GB).

Stewards' Reports for Race 6
Shortly after the start ZULAL (AE) (J Stack) and AFAF (AE) (C Gannon) had to be restrained. On enquiring into this incident Stewards took initial evidence from jockey J Stack, apprentice C Gannon, jockey C Avery (WS ASEEL (AE)) and apprentice T Houlihan (AL WAHYD) (AE) and adjourned the enquiry to 6pm Thursday 30 January 2003. Stewards concluded the enquiry into the reason for ZULAL (AE) and AFAF (AE) being restrained shortly after the start. Stewards believed that the slowing of the pace at this stage had compounded the impediment to those runners. Apprentice T Houlihan (AL WAHYD (AE)) was warned that he should not restrain his mount thereby causing a slowing and compaction of the field. Jockey J Stack, apprentice T Houlihan and apprentice C Gannon were reprimanded for failing to attend the adjournment of the enquiry at Abu Dhabi. Trainers Mr J Naylor and Mr K McLaughlin were reminded of their obligations to ensure that apprentices under their care were adequately represented when required at Stewards' enquiries.
