MASAALEK (GB) (P Dobbs), PLAYFELLOW (IRE) (W Buick) and GAME STALKER (USA) (A Ajtebi) were slow into stride. DR SMART (IRE) (W Smith) jumped out at the start and bumped COMMANDER CAVE (USA) (W Supple). DR SMART (IRE) then blundered shortly after the start. Leaving the 900m, DR SMART (IRE) raced in restricted room between BARBECUE EDDIE (USA) (R Hills) and PASO DE GLORIA (ARG) (A Murgia) and was momentarily eased. When questioned regarding his ride on PLAYFELLOW (IRE), Jockey W Buick advised that after being slowly out of the gates, he had to urge the gelding to keep pace with the rest of the field and that the gelding had struggled to find a true rhythm at any stage of the race, adding that he anticipated that the gelding would show more pace. Jockey W Buick further stated that on straightening he felt that the gelding had run his race and, as such, he elected not to fully test the gelding, particularly given that this was the first run for PLAYFELLOW (IRE) after a considerable lay off. The Stewards noted the explanation of Jockey W Buick. Jockey W Smith (DR SMART [IRE]) advised that after his mount had blundered at the start, the horse had a tendency to lay outwards and after entering the home straight, DR SMART (IRE) had continued this tendency to lay outwards, resulting in him being unable to fully test the colt with his normal vigour and, as a result, he elected to ease the colt down in the run to the line.
