Wasim The One To Beat In Abu Dhabi Thoroughbred Feature
The only Thoroughbred race on the Sunday card at Abu Dhabi would not have been out of place at Meydan’s 2021 Dubai World Cup Carnival and the 1400m handicap, the final of six races, promises to be a capital thriller.
At the top of the weights are Mukalal and Wasim, a seemingly 1400m specialist both owned and trained by Ismail Mohammed.
The mount of Fernando Jara, the 6-year-old Acclamation entire has four career victories to his name, an initial 1300m success, but followed by three over 1400m, twice at Meydan on turf. Those include his penultimate outing, a handicap before was only denied close home, over the same course and distance, in the Meydan Challenge, at one of the final carnival meetings.
Sharing the top weight burden with Wasim is Mukalal, trained by Erwan Charpy, the mount of Clement Lecoeuvre and one of three in the race for owner Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
The owner’s retained jockey, Jim Crowley, has opted to partner Hakeem for Musabbeh Al Mheiri, Szczepan Mazur booked to ride the owner’s third contender Yalaalil who is in the care of Ali Rashid Al Rayhi.
As well as Mukalal, Charpy also saddles Cenotaph, a fascinating contender to be ridden by Fabrice Veron for EERC (Emirates Entertainment Racing Club). A classy gelding, he has clearly had issues but he could be a surprise package in a wide open contest.
