Meydan Racecourse to stage competitive seven races on Sunday

Racing at Meydan on Sunday, a non-carnival meeting, is highlighted by a quartet of AED 95,000 handicaps, the one over 1800m on turf (race 5) perhaps taking centre stage.

The weights are headed by Godolphin’s Sense Of Wisdom and Valyrian Steel, trained by Fawzi Nass for Victorious.

A 4yo gelded son of Shamardal prepared by Charlie Appleby, the Godolphin contender has only had three career starts and has not added to his debut success over 1600m on the Newmarket July Course last June.
He does, however, have the benefit of a Meydan outing this season, not beaten far when eighth in a 1600m turf handicap at the carnival nine days ago.

Adrie de Vries will be aboard the aforementioned Valyrian Steel, a winner four times in Britain for Roger Varian, thrice on all-weather surfaces, just the once on turf.

A 6yo Frankel gelding, he has not really fired in four local starts for Nass but is surely capable of better and it would be no surprise to see him bounce back to form for his shrewd connections.

For Doug Watson and Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Pat Dobbs partners One Idea, a homebred 6yo gelded son of Dubawi and the winner of his latest start, a 1400m Jebel Ali handicap, at the beginning of November.

Watson’s charge is also a Meydan turf winner, having scored over 1600m in a maiden in February 2022 so the change of surface should not be an inconvenience.

Watson said: “It looks a good spot for him but obviously there is the Godolphin horse in there who looks to have major claims but our fellow is in good form and should run well.”
