After the majority of the field were loaded the gates prematurely opened with ALTON (USA) (P Hanagan) and SORCERER'S WIT (USA) (R Mullen) completing the course riderless. Both ALTON (USA) and SORCERER'S WIT (USA) were withdrawn at 3.07pm. It was later ascertained that the locking device on the start button had been de-activated and when the manual arming system was released this caused the gates to open. This caused a delay of some 8 minutes. AL MUNTASIR (AUS) (B Doyle) blundered on jumping.

Stewards' Reports for Edam
When attempting to shift the stalls from the 1200m to the 2000m start a hydraulic steering malfunction occurred. The starter was unable to position the stalls correctly at the 2000m position. Subsequently the Stewards deemed that the start should be effected from an open flag start. An announcement to this effect was made and trainers with horses engaged in this race were given the opportunity to withdraw their runners. All riders were given the opportunity to stand down. The start was effected approximately 15m in front of the 2000m position. ROYAL ALLIANCE (NZ) (D O'Donohoe) and CARNIVAL LAD (USA\ (G Birrer) stood flat footed and missing the start by a considerable margin. At approximately the 1000m SOLTAAT (GB) (P Smith) rolled in on NISSR AL JAZIRA (IRE) (R Burke). Following the running of this race, due to the fact that the stalls could not be utilised, Stewards instructed that races 5 and 6 be effected from an open flag start at their respective distances. Trainers with runners in both these races were given the opportunity to withdraw their horses from these races.
