MERCURY CHIEF (SAF) (K McEvoy) and SABIRLI (TUR) (J Spencer) were slow to begin. HIDDEN DRAGON (USA) (M Kinane) raced fiercely in the early stages. At the 450m FEZ (SAF) (T Durcan) shifted out bumping MERCURY CHIEF (SAF). Near the 400m SABIRLI (TUR) checked when racing inside FEZ (SAF), when questioned regarding this Jockey J Spencer stated that he had decided to attempt a run on the inside of FEZ (SAF) when that gelding shifted out. However, he had been disappointed in this endeavour and had then restrained SABIRLI (TUR) taking it to the outside for a clear passage.

WIN RIVER WIN (USA) (J Spencer) proved difficult to load delaying the start. Trainer Mr C Kurt was advised that WIN RIVER WIN (USA) was placed on the starters list and would require a stalls test before being entered to race. DEODATUS (USA) (T O'Shea) commenced awkwardly. STATE SHINTO (USA) (P Dillon) and PARASOL (IRE) (K Manning) bumped on jumping with PARASOL (IRE) having to be eased shortly after and lose ground. CHANGE THE GRANGE (AUS) (E Legrix) veered inwards on jumping causing GYPSY JOHNNY (GB) (R Mullen) to be steadied. ECLIPSE WEST (ARG) (P Smullen) was slow to begin and raced wide in the early stages. PARASOL (IRE) (K Manning) shifted inwards passing the 200m and bumped heavily with SAPUCAI (ARG) (R Moore), then crowded that gelding causing it to be restrained. PARASOL (IRE) continued to shift inwards and near the 100m carried ELMUSTANSER (GB) (R Hills) inwards. Jockey K Manning pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under ERA rule 69 (i) and was subsequently fined AED 1500 and suspended from riding in races for 3 days (Abu Dhabi on 29 January 2006, Nad Al Sheba on 2 February 2006, and Jebel Ali on 3 February 2006). When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of CLASP (GB), Jockey T Durcan explained that after traveling well in running, upon entering the straight the colt had appeared uncomfortable when held tight by runners and when urged along was reluctant to stride out.

BAILADOR (IRE) (S Golam) and TRADEMARK (SAF) (T Durcan) were slow to begin. SHAKIS (IRE) (R Hills) had to be restrained when blocked for a run on straightening. Jockey R Hill advised that this impediment had cost the horse considerable ground. Near the 1100m WOLF WHISTLE (SAF) (K Shea) lay inwards and made contact with BOULE D'OR (IRE) (N Day) on several occasions. Near the 300m DEMOCRATIC DEFICIT (IRE) (K Manning) shifted out bumping TERFEL (GB) (J Egan). BOULE D'OR (IRE) then shifted in crowding DEMOCRATIC DEFICIT (IRE) which bumped the hindquarters of KEY OF DESTINY (SAF) (K McEvoy). Jockey N Day was reprimanded for shifting in at this stage. Jockeys N Day (BOULE D'OR [IRE]) and J Egan (TERFEL [GB}) were cautioned for using their whips with their arms extended above the shoulder. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of WOLF WHISTLE (SAF) Jockey K Shea stated that after traveling wide throughout WOLF WHISTLE (SAF) had responded for only a short stretch in the straight and had compounded quickly. He was of the opinion that the horse had performed in a similar manner when racing first up last season and could offer only this as an explanation.
