LEAGUE CHAMPION (USA) (W Supple) jumped awkwardly. JUNCTION LINE (GB) (W Smith) and SELECT REASON (BRZ) (M Kinane) bumped heavily on jumping. SARISSA (BRZ) (J Murtagh) veered inwards on jumping and carried DOCTOR HILARY (GB) (T Durcan) inwards. ROCKETS 'N ROLLERS (IRE) (R Ffrench) jumped inwards at the start and crowded DRAYTON (IRE) (W Lordan) for room with that gelding then bumping with CANADIAN DANEHILL (IRE) (L Dettori). Passing the 800m JUNCTION LINE (GB) was momentarily steadied. LEAGUE CHAMPION (USA) was eased out of the race near the 600m. When questioned regarding this, Jockey W Supple was of the opinion that the gelding had injured itself and as such had elected to ease the gelding down. A post race veterinary examination LEAGUE CHAMPION (USA) revealed no abnormalities. SELECT REASON (BRZ) (M Kinane) returned with a badly cut mouth. JUNCTION LINE (GB) bled in running and passing the winning post collapsed and expired.

LIMEHOUSE (SAF) (J Murtagh) and AQMAAR (GB) (R Hills) both raced keenly in the early stages having to be steadied on several occasions. BIG TIMER (USA) (T Eaves) raced keenly in the early stages and was held up for clear running between the 400m and 250m. VALIANCE (USA) (M Kinane) raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. HURRICANE JAMES (IRE) raced wide throughout. JET EXPRESS (SAF) (R Ffrench) hung outwards over the final 200m. ALPACCO (IRE) (A Starke) had a tendency to lay inwards in the straight. When questioned regarding the poor performance of MOMTIC (IRE), Jockey R Mullen could offer no explanations. MOMTIC (IRE) returned having lost its right hind plate.

LEAVING ALONE (BRZ) (W Supple) shifted in at the start crowding SAFETY INVESTMENTS (AUS) (M Kinane). PARASOL (IRE) (T Durcan) dwelt on jumping and lost considerable ground. SAFETY INVESTMENTS (AUS) raced ungenerously in the early stages. Approaching the 1400m, MORGHIM (IRE) (M Dwyer) was crowded for room and had to be steadied off the heels of ACROBATIC (USA) (R Moore). KAYAK (SAF) (J Murtagh) raced wide throughout. BENNIE BLUE (SAF) (K Shea) returned with a cut to its mouth and also to its right hind. When questioned regarding the performance of PARASOL (IRE), Jockey T Durcan stated that after missing the start badly the gelding had showed a lack of interest in racing competitively and as such had eased PARASOL (IRE) down over the concluding stages. When questioned regarding the performance of KAYAK (SAF), Jockey J Murtagh stated that he had been caught wide on the gelding in running and when the tempo of the race quickened near the 800m, KAYAK (SAF) had failed to respond as he had expected. He also stated that the gelding had been reluctant to face the kick back in running. A post race veterinary examination of KAYAK (SAF) revealed no abnormalities. IGOR PROTTI (GB) (L Dettori) returned with a cut to its right hind.

Near the 600m, LUNDY'S LANE (IRE) (M Dwyer) had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring NEPOTISTA (BRZ). Approaching the 200m, COEUR DE LIONNE (IRE) (S Drowne) was restrained off the heels of LAKE POET (IRE) (P Smullen). When questioned regarding the performance of L'AMICO STEVE (BRZ), Jockey T O'Shea stated that the colt never felt comfortable in running and could offer no other excuse. GHARIR (IRE) (R Hills) was slow to begin and lost ground. THE PIRATE (DEN) over-raced in the early stages getting its head in the air on several occasions. Near the 400m the tiring DAVIDOFF (GER) (A Starke) was steadied when LORD ADMIRAL (USA) shifted outwards. Shortly after, DAVIDOFF (GER) bumped with TESLIN (IRE) (L Dettori) which had to ease momentarily. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of DAVIDOFF (GER), jockey A Starke could offer no excuses. A post race veterinary examination of DAVIDOFF (GER) revealed no abnormalities. When questioned regarding the performance of TESLIN (IRE), Jockey L Dettori stated that the gelding may not have been suited to racing within a week of its previous run and had raced flat.
