DARK POINT (GB) (D O’Donohoe) which had been racing keenly made the turn near the 800m awkwardly and had to be steadied from the heels of QUEEN JOCK (USA) (A Nicholls). Apprentice A Ajtebi was questioned regarding his riding of ESQUIRE (GB) over the final 100m. Apprentice Ajtebi stated that he was instructed to have ESQUIRE (GB) in a forward position during the race which he was able to achieve, although he stated ESQUIRE (GB) had raced more freely in running than he would have liked. He further stated that after putting ESQUIRE (GB) under pressure in the straight the horse began to tire quicker than he had expected and as it was ESQUIRE’s (GB) was first run for almost a year he had elected not to ride the horse out as vigorously as he would normally do. Whilst the Stewards acknowledged Apprentice Ajtebi’s statement, they were of the opinion that he was entitled to ride ESQUIRE (GB) in a more purposeful manner over the final 100m than he displayed, As such, Apprentice Ajtebi was reprimanded for failing to ride his mount out adequately to the finish.

Passing the 800m, DORREIRA (PER) (T Durcan), which was beginning to lose ground rolled inwards, and caused SOUND THE DRUM (USA) (R Ffrench) to be steadied. Passing the 250m, GREEN COAST (IRE) (F Jara) shifted inwards onto SKYWARDS (GB) (T O’Shea) which in turn moved in slightly with SOUND THE DRUM (USA), although not being restricted for room, being steadied. When questioned regarding the performance of DORREIRA (PER), Jockey T Durcan could offer no excuses other than the mare had raced flat. A post race veterinary examination of DORREIRA (PER) revealed no abnormalities.

On returning to the scales, a protest was lodged by Jockey R French, rider of 2nd placed horse SEA HUNTER (GB) against the winner of the race TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA) (T Durcan) alleging interference over the concluding 100m of the race. After considering the objection, whilst it was evident that TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA) had shifted ground abruptly over the final 100m, the Stewards also took into account where the interference occurred, how both horses were finishing the race and the eventual winning margin of 1¼ lengths and were not satisfied that had the interference not occurred, that SEA HUNTER (GB) would have beaten TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA). As such, the objection was dismissed and correct weight was declared. After being loaded into the gates, MALAYEEN (AUS) (A Ajtebi) became fractious and was momentarily cast in the gates. MALAYEEN (AUS) then underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to race. Trainer Mr A Selvaratnam was advised that MALAYEEN (AUS) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to being entered to race again. SEA HUNTER (GB) and VALIANCE (USA) (K Latham) bumped at the start. Passing the 100m, TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA) veered outwards sharply causing SEA HUNTER (GB) to be restrained. On enquiry, the Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey T Durcan could not be blamed for this incident as TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA) veered outwards so quickly, he was unable to correct the horse to avoid causing interference. As such, no action was taken against Jockey Durcan.
