STORYVILLE (GB) (W Smith) jumped awkwardly and was then inconvenienced when DONIA DUBAI (IRE) (K John) jumped inwards. OTRANTO (USA) (R Ffrench) commenced awkwardly and lost ground. Approaching the 1600m, STEP IN LINE (USA) (A Ajtebi) shifted inwards causing DAHTEER (IRE) (W Buick) to steady inwards and crowd DESERT SANDS (AUS) (R Mullen) for room with that gelding having to momentarily ease. On enquiry, Apprentice A Ajtebi (STEP IN LINE [USA]) was reprimanded for not allowing sufficient room to runners to his inside. Jockey K Latham (FORTY HABLADOR [ARG]) reported that his mount had a tendency to shift ground both inwards and outwards in running. Jockey A Nichols (PRIDE OF BAGHDAD [USA]) reported that his mount stopped quickly in the straight. Jockey W Smith (STORYVILLE [GB]) reported that his mount became unbalanced and lost his action from the 200m. A post race veterinary examination of STORYVILLE (GB) revealed no abnormalities.

Jockey K John was unable to make the allotted weight of 52kg on CHERRY PICKINGS (USA). The Stewards granted permission for Apprentice S Gorey to be the replacement rider as there was no other Jockey available who could make the allotted weight of 52kg on CHERRY PICKINGS (USA). On enquiry, Jockey K John was found guilty of breaching ERA Rule 57 (v) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for 2 days (Nad Al Sheba January 8, 2009 and Abu Dhabi January 11, 2009). Further to this, Jockey K John was advised that he would not be permitted to accept rides under 55kg until approved to do so by the Stewards . CHERRY PICKINGS (USA) shifted inwards at the start causing HOUSE (GB) (A Ajtebi) to shift in onto EKHTIAR (GB) (R Hills) which in turn made contact with CROONER (IRE) (R Ffrench) which lost ground. Apprentice A Ajtebi [HOUSE (GB)] reported to the Stewards that his whip broke during the race and had become tangled in his reins, this he stated, had then restricted his ability to ride the colt out over the concluding stages. CHERRY PICKINGS (USA) returned having bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr R Bouresly was advised that CHERRY PICKINGS (USA) would not be permitted to start for 21 days and must complete a satisfactory gallop in the presence of an ERA Veterinary Officer prior to being entered to a race again.
