BALTHAZAAR’S GIFT (IRE) (D O’Donohoe) threw its head in the air on jumping. MANDOBI (IRE) (W Buick) jumped awkwardly. LION’S BLOOD (SAF) (J Egan) bounded on jumping. GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB) (T O’Shea) over-raced in the early stages. Passing the 1200m, CONFUCHIAS (IRE) (E Ahern) and SANTIAGO ATITLAN (GB) (M Kinane) both commenced to over race and made contact with each other. This caused MANDOBI (IRE) which was following to be steadied and shift inwards onto PRINCE TAMINO (GB) (R Ffrench) which also commenced to over-race and crowd GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB). Shortly after this, HUNTING TOWER (SAF) (K Shea) raced ungenerously for a short distance when crossed by INSTANT RECALL (IRE) (W Smith). VALERY BORZOV (IRE) (A Nicholls) made the turn into the straight awkwardly and on straightening shifted outwards and had to be steadied from the heels of SANTIAGO ATITLAN (GB). HATTA FORT (GB) (L Dettori) was held up for clear running in the straight. Passing the 400m, HUNTING TOWER (SAF) was impeded for a clear run. SO WILL I (GB) (R Hills) and GRANTLEY ADAMS (GB) made contact near the 100m. SANTIAGO ATITLAN (GB) returned having lost its right fore plate.

SANBUCH (GB) (A Murgia) and POLAN (FR) (J Martinez) bumped on jumping. BIG ROBERT (GB) (E Ahern) was slow to begin. GRAVITAS (GB) (A Ajtebi) and LOVE GALORE (IRE) (R Moore) raced keenly in the early stages. Running to the winning post the first time, LEITMOTIV (IRE) (W Buick) shifted inwards quickly and made contact with the hind quarters of BIG ROBERT (GB). At the same time, CRAIGSTOWN (GB) (T O’Shea) was eased off the heels of BENNIE BLUE (SAF) (K Shea) and in doing so shifted inwards crowding HAWKS HOME (USA) (W Smith). Shortly afterwards CAPTAIN WEBB (GB) (T Durcan) lay inwards causing CRAIGSTOWN (GB) to be crowded for room. Making the turn out of the straight, PEARLY KING (USA) (R Ffrench) was momentarily steadied when DETONATOR (IRE) (J Rosales) crossed to the lead. Near the 500m, NOBLE BEDOUIN (IRE) shifted outwards and bumped with POLAN (FR). In the early parts of the straight, SANBUCH (GB) was impeded for clear running. TRICIEN (FR) raced wide throughout. When questioned regarding the performance of NOBLE BEDOUIN (IRE), Jockey J Verenzuela could offer no excuses as he stated that the gelding had travelled well in running and had simply failed to run on in the straight. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of GRAVITAS (GB), Assistant Trainer Mahmoud Al Zarooni stated that in his opinion GRAVITAS (GB) had shown natural improvement from its first up run and had also benefited from being ridden in a more forward position. GRAVITAS (GB) returned with a cut to its left fore. BIG ROBERT (GB) returned with a cut to its left hind.

Trainer Mr C Swan was advised that VARSITY (GB) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to being entered to race again. FENICE (IRE) (R Mullen) jumped awkwardly and was reluctant to stride out in the early stages. DRILL SERGEANT (GB) (L Dettori) shifted outwards at the start on to DR FAUSTUS (IRE) (F Jara). Passing the 1400m, MEYDAN CITY (USA) (C Sandoval) shifted outwards causing ROYAL PRINCE (GB) (D O’Donohoe) to be restrained. On enquiry, Jockey C Sandoval (MEYDAN CITY [USA]) was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ERA Rule 69(i) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for 2 days (Abu Dhabi February 1, 2009 and Nad Al Sheba February 5, 2009). DR FAUSTUS (IRE) raced wide throughout. FENICE (IRE) had difficulty obtaining clear running near the 250m. Passing the 200m, YADDREE (GB) was held up for clear running and was taken outwards across the heels of GREAT PLAINS (GB) (R Hills) and when doing so had to be steadied when crossed by MILITARY POWER (GB) (C Sanchez). On enquiry, Jockey C Sanchez (MILITARY POWER [GB]) was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift ground when insufficiently clear. YADDREE (GB) then continued outwards to obtain clear running and near the 100m shifted outwards quickly off the heels of AL SHEMALI (GB) (J Rosales). Apprentice A Ajtebi (YADDREE [GB]) was advised he must exercise greater care when shifting ground in future. Jockey C Sanchez (MILITARY POWER [GB]) was reprimanded for using his whip without allowing time for his mount to respond. When questioned regarding the performance of DRILL SERGEANT (GB), Trainer Mr M Johnston could offer no excuses for the disappointing run. Jockey L Dettori could also offer no explanation for the poor run. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities.

SEA HUNTER (GB) (R Ffrench) jumped awkwardly. LEAGUE CHAMPION (USA) (K John) jumped outwards at the start and made contact with NORTHERN FLING (GB) (M Kinane). When questioned regarding the performance of TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA), Jockey T Durcan could offer no excuses although stated that, in his opinion the horse had lost its action in the straight. A post race endoscopic examination revealed significant mucous in the airways of TERRIFIC CHALLENGE (USA). When questioned regarding the performance of BARBECUE EDDIE (USA), Jockey R Hills could only state that the horse had never travelled during the race. A post race veterinary examination of BARBECUE EDDIE (USA) revealed no abnormalities.

ALEXANDROS (GB) (L Dettori) shifted inwards at the start bumping SWOP (IRE) (T Durcan) with that gelding then shifting inwards making contact with PERFECT SEASON (SAF) (E Ahern). RAGHEED (USA) (R Hills) over-raced in the early stages. Running to the turn near the 1400m, PERFECT SEASON (SAF) (E Ahern), when tightened for room commenced to over-race, having to be steadied from the heels of BOUND BY HONOUR (SAF) (R Moore). STEPPING UP (IRE) (T O’Shea) had difficulty in obtaining a clear run in the straight. Running to the 200m, SWOP (IRE) after being held up was momentarily crowded for room. When questioned regarding the performance of SWOP (IRE) jockey T Durcan stated that the gelding had travelled well in running but when asked for an effort in the straight had failed to respond as he would have liked.
