SELECT REASON (BRZ) (R Mullen) was slow into stride and over-raced in the early stages. The Stewards enquired into Jockey K John’s use of the whip in the straight on LEAGUE CHAMPION (USA) and subsequently reprimanded him for using his whip in a manner which did not allow time for his mount to respond. Jockey R Mullen (SELECT REASON [BRZ]) reported that his mount made a respiratory noise in running. A post race veterinary examination of SELECT REASON (BRZ) revealed no abnormalities.

Near the turn at the 1400m, SINGING POET (IRE) (T O’Shea) when racing to the inside of ART OF WAR (SAF) (J Murtagh) was eased momentarily. ART OF WAR (SAF) returned with a cut to its left hind. Jockey E Ahern reported that ALEUTIAN (GB) hung outwards in running. SINGING POET (IRE) returned with a cut to its right hind.

NARC (SAF) (K Latham) jumped awkwardly and bumped with CHANGE ALLEY (USA) (R Ffrench). NARC (SAF) was then crowded for room for a short distance, after NEW FREEDOM (BRZ) (W Smith) on its inside had drifted outwards slightly, which resulted in NARC (SAF) having to be steadied off that gelding’s heels when held tight by CHANGE ALLEY (USA). When questioned regarding the performance of J J THE JET PLANE (SAF), both the Trainer, Mr M de Kock and Jockey K Shea were of the opinion that the gelding had failed to handle the dirt surface. A post race veterinary examination of the gelding revealed no abnormalities.

ONCE MORE DUBAI (USA) (T Durcan) was examined by the Veterinary Officer at the start for a cut to its mouth and was passed fit to start. HELLO MORNING (FR) (T O’Shea) was fractious in the gates. Trainer Mr E Charpy was advised that HELLO MORNING (FR) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to being entered to race again. Approaching the 1600m, HATTAN (IRE) (A Murgia) shifted inwards causing ONCE MORE DUBAI (USA), which had been racing ungenerously, to be steadied off that horse’s heels. DOCOFTHEBAY (IRE) (D O’Donohoe) which was following was inconvenienced in this incident. On enquiry, the Stewards were of the opinion that whilst ONCE MORE DUBAI (USA)’s racing manners had contributed to the interference. HATTAN (IRE) had still shifted inwards when not fully clear. As such, Apprentice A Murgia (HATTAN [IRE]) was reprimanded for failing to allow sufficient room for runners on his inside. ONCE MORE DUBAI (USA) was held up behind the tiring HELLO MORNING (FR) between the 500m and 300m.
