LADY MARIAN (GER) (L Dettori) raced keenly in the early stages. Leaving the 1600m, BALIUS (IRE) (W Supple) bumped heavily with ARCHIPENKO (USA) (K Shea), which had shifted in away from LADY MARIAN (GER), which was restrained momentarily when JAY PEG (USA) (W Marwing) shifted ground inwards. At the same time, KIP DEVILLE (USA) (C Velasquez) had drifted out slightly, which caused BALIUS (IRE) to be restrained. Approaching the turn at the 1400m, PACO BOY (IRE) (R Hughes) had to be restrained off the heels of NICONERO (AUS) (C Williams). Shortly after this, CREACHADOIR (IRE) (T Durcan) was restrained off the heels of BANKABLE (IRE) (J Murtagh), when that horse rolled inwards slightly. Over the concluding stages, ARCHIPENKO (USA) veered inwards quickly, off the heels of the tiring VODKA (JPN) (Y Take) onto PACO BOY (IRE). Jockey W Supple reported that BALIUS (IRE) ran very flat. Jockey L Dettori reported that LADY MARIAN (GER) over-raced in the early stages and was unable to get cover.

At the start, SPANISH MOON (USA) (R Moore) shifted inwards onto RUSSIAN SAGE (SAF) (B Faydherbe), which caused EASTERN ANTHEM (IRE) (A Ajtebi) to be steadied off the heels of FRONT HOUSE (IRE) (K Shea). Leaving the 2200m, KINGS GAMBIT (SAF) (J Egan) which was racing keenly, shifted in abruptly off the heels of MARSH SIDE (USA) (E Prado), which resulted in QUIJANO (GER) (A Starke) being taken in across YOUMZAIN (IRE) (R Hills), causing that horse to be restrained. DEEM which was following was also inconvenienced in this incident. EASTERN ANTHEM (IRE) over-raced in the early stages. RED ROCKS (IRE) (J Castellano) raced wide in the early and middle stages. Running to the 400m, YOUMZAIN (IRE) was held up behind the tiring RED ROCKS (IRE) and had to be restrained off that horse’s heels, and when doing so bumped the hind quarters of QUIJANO (GER). Over the concluding stages, EASTERN ANTHEM (IRE) which had a tendency to lay inwards made contact on two occasions with PURPLE MOON (IRE) (J Spencer). RUSSIAN SAGE (SAF) returned having bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr M de Kock was advised that RUSSIAN SAGE (SAF) would not be permitted to start until it had passed a satisfactory gallop test in the presence of an ERA Veterinary Officer to be conducted not before 21 days from the date of bleeding. SPANISH MOON (USA) (R Moore) returned with a cut to its right hind and a cut to its mouth.

ASIATIC BOY (ARG) (J Murtagh) jumped inwards at the start bumping SNAAFY (USA) (R Hills) onto ARSON SQUAD (USA) (E Prado), which in turn shifted inwards bumping MUHANNAK (IRE) (R Moore) which lost ground. Passing the 1600m, CASINO DRIVE (USA) (K Ando) shifted inwards away from PARIS PERFECT (SAF) (B Faydherbe), and in doing so crowded ASIATIC BOY (ARG) which had to be restrained. Shortly after this, near the 1400m, CASINO DRIVE (USA) shifted in further and in doing so caused ARSON SQUAD (USA) to be checked to avoid its heels and lose ground. On enquiry, Jockey K Ando (CASINO DRIVE [USA]) was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ERA Rule 69(i) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for the first 2 days of the ERA racing season 2009-2010 (dates to be confirmed). A post race veterinary examination of ASIATIC BOY (ARG) revealed no abnormalities although Trainer M de Kock believed the horse may have resented the kick back in running.
