FUEGUINO (ARG) (R Burke) was slow into stride. BAB AL BAHRAIN (USA) (K John) raced greenly throughout. Passing the 500m, MEERISS (IRE) (W Buick) was held up behind the tiring BLUE MARBLE (GB) (A Nicholls) and then shifted outwards, causing GONGIDAS (GB) (T O’Shea) to be momentarily crowded for room inside ESTIHDAAF (USA) (R Hills), which had rolled inwards marginally. Jockey A Nicholls reported that BLUE MARBLE (GB) had lost its action in running and was of the opinion that the gelding may have been injured. A post race veterinary examination of BLUE MARBLE (GB) revealed no abnormalities.

Approaching the 200m, QUEBEC CITIZEN (BRZ) (W Smith) shifted outwards allowing ROCHDALE (GB) (R Ffrench) to take a run to its inside. Shortly afterwards, QUEBEC CITIZEN (BRZ) shifted back inwards causing ROCHDALE (GB) to be restrained. On enquiry, Jockey W Smith (QUEBEC CITIZEN [BRZ]) was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ERA Rule 69 (i) and was subsequently suspended from riding in races for 2 days (Abu Dhabi February 22, 2009 and Nad Al Sheba February 26, 2009). IGOR PROTTI (GB) (W Supple) was held up for clear running between the 400m and 200m and near the 175m made contact with MORGHIM (IRE) (R Hills). At the 100m, SPRING CITY (GER) (T O’Shea) had to be eased off the heels of DUBAI TWILIGHT (GB) (A Murgia) when that gelding shifted outwards.
