After being loading in the gates, IMBONGI (SAF) (K Shea) became fractious and sat down for a short time. IMBONGI (SAF) underwent a veterinary examination and was passed fit to start. Trainer Mr M de Kock was advised that IMBONGI (SAF) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to being entered to race again. After being awkward out of the starting gates, NIZAA (USA) (E Yavuz) then raced keenly and raced into a position to the outside of the heels of HAMMADI (IRE) (W Supple), and when HAMMADI (IRE) shifted outwards slightly, NIZAA (USA) shifted outwards causing HUNTING TOWER (SAF) (P Cosgrave) to be restrained and lose its position. Jockey E Yavuz (NIZAA [USA]) was advised that he must exercise greater care in similar circumstances. Jockey E Yavuz (NIZAA [USA]) dropped his whip at the 300m. When questioned regarding the performance of IMBONGI (SAF), Jockey K Shea stated that the horse was well above himself and he had sweated up quite badly in the preliminary. He further stated that whilst the stable felt that the horse may be able to show some pace given that he was early in his campaign, the horse will be better suited over further distance. A post-race veterinary examination of IMBONGI (SAF) revealed no abnormalities. Jockey W Smith reported that in his opinion MANNJAL (USA) had felt uncomfortable in its action in the latter parts of the race. A post-race veterinary examination of MANNJAL (USA) (W Smith) revealed no abnormalities.
