NOT A GIVEN (USA) (K Fallon) jumped awkwardly and was then carried outwards by BANNA BOIRCHE (IRE) (S Foley), crowding AKEED WAFI (IRE) (R Ffrench) out onto MARINER’S CROSS (IRE) (M Barzalona), which was carried inwards by FINJAAN (GB) (P Hanagan). SANDAGIYR (FR) (P Dobbs) was slow to begin. NORDIC TRUCE (USA) (J Spencer) and STORM ULTRALIGHT (ARG) (R Mullen) began awkwardly. NORDIC TRUCE (USA) raced keenly in the early stages. FINJAAN (GB) and MARINER’S CROSS (IRE) both made the bend at the 1300m awkwardly. Leaving the 1300m MARINER’S CROSS (IRE), when racing keenly, brushed with NOT A GIVEN (USA) and was restrained. AKEED WAFI (IRE), which was following MARINER’S CROSS (IRE) at this stage, was also restrained. A short distance later, BANNA BOIRCHE (IRE) drifted inwards away from MARINER’S CROSS (IRE) and momentarily crowded JARDIM (BRZ) (J Geroudis). After making the bend at the 1300m, STORM ULTRALIGHT (ARG) brushed with IVER BRIDGE LAD (GB) (D O’Donohoe) and then ran outwards, carrying SPIRIT OF BATTLE (USA) (P Cosgrave) wider on the track. Approaching the 1200m, SPIRIT OF BATTLE (USA), which was racing keenly, shifted inwards causing STORM ULTRALIGHT (ARG), which was also racing keenly, to be eased.

A veterinary examination of WEALTHY (IRE) revealed the gelding to have fractured its pelvis, and it was subsequently euthanized by the ERA Veterinary Officer. A post-race veterinary examination of FLORENTINO (JPN) (R Mullen), which gave ground abruptly from the 700m, revealed no abnormalities.

INVINCIBLE ASH (IRE) (J Spencer) and RUSSIAN SOUL (IRE) (S Foley) both began awkwardly. FINAL BUTTON (SAF) (P Cosgrave) and CONFESSIONAL (GB) (R Mullen) bumped on jumping. DEVIL’S CUT (AUS) (T Durcan) and RUSSIAN ROCK (IRE) (W Smith) bumped on jumping. Leaving the 500m, ALO PURA (GB) (J Doyle) and THE REAPER (IRE) (G Carroll) bumped. As the field linked up with the course proper near the 450m, DEVIL’S CUT (AUS) raced in an awkward position for a short distance between ROSENDHAL (IRE) (M Barzalona) and FINAL BUTTON (SAF), which drifted outwards. HAPPY DUBAI (IRE) (R Moore) returned having bled from both nostrils. Trainer Mr A Al Raihe was advised that HAPPY DUBAI (IRE) would not be permitted to start until it had passed a satisfactory gallop test in the presence of an ERA Veterinary Officer, to be conducted not before 60 days from the date of bleeding. Jockey G Carroll advised the Stewards that THE REAPER (IRE) was fresh and raced keenly in the early stages of the race and, in his opinion, the gelding will benefit from today’s run.

SNOWBOARDER (USA) (K Fallon) broke through the front of its starting gate but was quickly reined in. SNOWBOARDER (USA) was examined by the Veterinary Officer and was passed fit to start. Trainer Mr M Al Zarooni was advised that SNOWBOARDER (USA) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to being permitted to be entered to race again. EL ESTRUENDOSO (ARG) (C Soumillon) was fractious in the starting gates. Trainer Mr M de Kock was advised that EL ESTRUENDOSO (ARG) would be required to complete a satisfactory stalls test prior to it being permitted to be entered to race again. RELATED (GB) (T O’Shea) and SNOWBOARDER (USA) were slow to begin. TARBAWI (IRE) (T Durcan) was crowded at the start between TIMONEER (USA) (A Ajtebi) and I’M BACK (IRE) (S de Sousa). Leaving the 1100m FILFIL (USA) (M Barzalona) shifted inwards away from EL ESTRUENDOSO (ARG), which momentarily crowded GLASS OFFICE (GB) (J Spencer). A short distance later, FILFIL (USA) lay inwards causing GLASS OFFICE (GB) to be eased. FILFIL (USA) continued to lay inwards and making the bend at the 800m crowded and inconvenienced RELATED (GB) for a short distance. GLASS OFFICE (GB) was impeded for clear running in the home straight behind ZAHEE (NZ) (J Geroudis) and to the inside of EL ESTRUENDOSO (ARG). Passing the 100m, GLASS OFFICE (GB) brushed with EL ESTRUENDOSO (ARG) and then angled to the inside of ZAHEE (NZ) to obtain clear running. The Stewards noted an explanation from Jockey J Spencer that in the early stages of the home straight it was his intention to shift to the outside to obtain clear running, but he was unable to do so. He then elected to follow ZAHEE (NZ) into the race, in anticipation that it would carry him into the race. However, when ZAHEE (NZ) failed to sprint quickly, Jockey J Spencer stated that he then had to wait for clear running, and this did not eventuate until GLASS OFFICE (GB) was able to improve to the inside of ZAHEE (NZ) when it drifted outwards inside the final 100m.

Race 6. Dubai Duty Free Full Of Surprises Handicap 2410m (Turf) CHICAGO (IRE) (T O’Shea) was slow to begin. Jockey M Barzalona (ANATOLIAN [GB]) was fined AED 1500 for breaching ERA Instruction 8(ii)(c)(vi) in that he used his whip with excessive frequency. Adjourned Enquiry from Meydan – Thursday 10 January 2013 Held at ERA (Meydan) Offices – Monday 14 January 2013 Race 5. Al Rashidiya Trial Presented by Longines 1800m (Turf) The Stewards reconvened an inquiry into an incident making the bend near the 800m, where SO BEAUTIFUL (FR) (P Hanagan) shifted outwards causing AL SHEMALI (GB) to be restrained outwards across the heels of NASEEM ALYASMEEN (IRE) (D O'Neill). The Stewards noted the explanations of the riders involved, that Jockey P Hanagan (SO BEAUTIFUL [FR]) was in some difficulty at this time due to the lack of pace in the race, and that AL SHEMALI (GB) may have over-reacted to the movement from SO BEAUTIFUL (FR). Notwithstanding, Jockey P Hanagan (SO BEAUTIFUL [FR]) was warned and advised that even though he was in some difficulty himself, he should make every endeavour to correct his own situation without interfering with any other runners.
