On Wednesday 5th March 2014 the ERA Registry Office discovered that SNS NUJOOD (AE), which was entered in Race 5 at Abu Dhabi on 9 March 2014, had been incorrectly handicapped at 58.0kgs. This was due to a clerical error. Under the provisions of ERA 18(i)(a), the weight for SNS NUJOOD (AE) was re-handicapped to the correct weight of 60.0kgs. Whilst at the barrier BANGO (AE) was kicked by another runner. BANGO (AE) underwent a veterinary examination and passed fit to take its place on the field. CERCINA (AE) was slow into stride. On jumping BANGO (AE) shifted out bumping MAFTOON AL REEF (AE). Shortly after the start AZ AL NEYEF (AE) commenced to lose ground and hang out. Passing the 400 metres AZ AL NAYEF (AE) veered outward abruptly and was then eased out of the event. Approaching the 300 metres CERCINA (AE), which was racing greenly, was held tight by ES ZERIYAB (AE) on its outside. CERCINA (AE) then shifted outwards in the run to the post. A post-race veterinary examination of AZ AL NAYEF (AE) revealed the colt to be lame in the right fore leg. Trainer Ms S Al Ghurair (AZ AL NAYEF (AE)) was notified that prior to the colt being entered to race again she must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for AZ AL NAYEF (AE).

When questioned, Jockey P Cosgrave (ES YAKA’A (AE)) explained that the mare had travelled well in the early stages but near the 400 metres the ES YAKA’S (AE) was beaten and under these circumstances he did not pull the whip and rode hands and heels to the finish. A post-race veterinary examination of ES YAKA’A (AE) revealed no significant abnormalities. Jockey A De Vries (SHAHLA (AE)) was fined AED 1,000 under the provisions of ERA Instruction 8(ii)(b)for using the whip in an improper manner when SHAHLA (AE) was being placed in its barrier, in that he struck the mare over the head with the whip.

At the barrier stalls the saddles of SAFIR BAINUNA (AE) and TALMOUD (AE) had to be adjusted. On jumping MONAWER (AE) veered inwards sharply losing ground and then raced wide without cover throughout. KALAHARI DESERT (AE) was slow into stride. Approaching the 1200 metres MD STERLING SILVER (US) restrained when TALMOUD (AE) which was racing greenly lay inwards. In the straight RB SMOKIN RICH (US) lay outwards. Jockey H Bentley (SAFIR BAINUNA) reported that shortly after the start his saddle shifted back, placing him at a disadvantage throughout the race.

Approaching the 200 metres AZ LAHEEB (AE), which was hanging out, carried MAWARED EL MEDAM (AE) outwards, as a result MAWARED EL MADAM (AE) had to be steadied from the heels of AF DHAHAM (AE). Jockey T O’Shea (BARAK (AE)) dropped his whip approaching the 50 metres. A post-race veterinary examination of MEMATI BASH (AE) revealed the horse to be lame in the left fore. Trainer Mr H Al Alawi (MEMATI BASH (AE)) was notified that prior to the horse being entered to race again he pass a suitability test conducted by an ERA veterinary officer. A post-race veterinary examination of SNS NUJOOD (AE) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

At the barrier stalls the saddle of CONCORDAT (GB) had to be adjusted. Arriving at the barrier the left-fore plate on ZURBRIGGEN (GB) required refitting, as this could not be achieved the right-fore plate was removed and ZURBRIGGEN (GB) raced bare in front. CANWINN (IRE) raced wide without cover in the early and middle. MUJRAYAAT (IRE) made the turn into the straight wide. ZURBRIGGEN (GB) was blocked for a clear run for the entire length of the straight.
