When questioned regarding the performance of the horse, the rider could offer no explanation and that HANDASSA (FR) failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure.

MEGNAAS (ARG) - (C Soumillon): Steadied and lost ground near the 800 metres. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, the rider explained that he had to ride MEGNAAS (ARG) aggressively in the early stages and approaching the 800 metres the gelding did not appreciate the kickback and failed to make the turn, resulting in MEGNAAS (ARG) having to be steadied off heels and losing ground. He added that, in his opinion, MEGNAAS (ARG) did not handle the dirt surface. BEST SOLUTION (IRE) - (A Atzeni): Lay in under pressure in the straight. COSMO CHARLIE (USA) - (P Dobbs): Shifted in on jumping and bumped another runner. FLY AT DAWN (USA) - (M Barzalona): Bumped on jumping and was tightened for room. GOOD OMEN (GB) - (O Murphy): Commenced awkwardly and then was tightened for room. MAZEED (USA) - (P Cosgrave): Shifted out on jumping and bumped heavily with another runner. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the right foreleg. Trainer Mr M de Kock was notified that prior to the colt being entered to race again he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for MAZEEED (USA). When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, the rider explained that TUMBAGA (USA) failed to improve when put under pressure rounding the home turn and his opinion was not suited to the dirt surface. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. NEED TO KNOW (SAF) - (R Mullen): Difficult to load. Commenced awkwardly. Passing the 600 meters was momentarily held up for a clear run. Trainer Mr A Al Rayhi was notified that prior to the gelding being entered to race again it must complete one satisfactory stalls test. ALABASTER (USA) - (O Murphy): Slow to begin. On straightening was bumped by another runner. Rider reported after being slow to begin he had to ride the horse aggressively as it was off the bridle. General: Jockey O Murphy (ALABASTER (USA)) was reprimanded under the provisions of ERA Rule 69(B)(a) for using the whip excess, in that he used it on 15 occasions. O Murphy was also reprimanded under the provisions of ERA Rule 69B(c)(i) for hitting his mount in front of the saddle whilst holding the whip in his forehand.
