Stewards' Reports for Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown
CAKOUET DE BOZOULS (FR) - (R Ffrench): Slow to begin. Shortly after the start was taken outwards and bumped heavily with another runner. Continued to then shift out and bumped another runner. CHADDAD (GB) - (I Al Balushi): Slow to begin. Tightened for room by another runner near the 1300 metres. CHEIK ROQUE (FR) - (H Bentley): Began awkwardly. FAUCON DU LOUP (FR) - (P Dobbs): When questioned regarding the performance of the horse, the rider explained that he felt that FAUCON DU LOUP (FR) had been galloped on in the early stages of the race and then following that failed to let down. He added that the horse may be better suited to racing on dirt. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities other than the horse to have lost its left hind plate. MURAAQIB (FR) - (J Crowley): Near the 1500 metres was bumped on the hindquarter by another runner. Was taken outwards by another runner over the final 200 metres and approaching the winning post was bumped and became unbalanced and lost ground. QUICK AND RICH (US) - (S Hitchcott): Shifted in at the 1400 metres and hampered another runner. RB BURN (US) - (G Avranche): Over-raced early stages. RMMAS (FR) - (FX Bertras): Shortly after the start was tightened for room, shifted out and bumped another runner. Over-raced in the early stages. SNIPER DE MONLAU (FR) - (P Cosgrave): Shortly after the start was tightened for room and bumped heavily with another runner and lost ground. Had a tendency to hang left throughout the race. MAHBOOBA (FR) - (T O'Shea): Raced wide without cover throughout. RB MADYMOISELLE (US) - (A Fresu): Tightened for room by another runner near the 1300 metres. General: Prior to correct weight Jim Crowley, the rider of second place getter MURAAQIB (FR) lodged an objection against RB BURN (US)(Gerald Avranche) being declared the winner, on the grounds of interference in the straight. On the evidence it was established that from the 200 metres RB BURN (US) commenced to lay outwards, forcing MURAAQIB (FR) wider on the track. Then approaching the winning post, over the concluding stages RB BURN (US) shifted out and bumped heavily with MURAAQIB (FR), unbalancing that horse and causing it to lose ground. Taking into account the official margin of a neck and ERA Rule 82B, the Stewards were satisfied that had MURAAQIB (FR) been afforded a clear run in the straight and not been bumped and unbalanced over the concluding stages, that horse would have finished in front of RB BURN (US). Stewards therefore upheld the protest and ordered the placing to be reversed to: 1st – MURAAQIB (FR) 2nd – RB BURN (US) At a subsequent inquiry Gerald Avranche pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of ERA Rule 69(i), the particulars being that over the final 200 metres he allowed his mount to shift out and over the concluding stages shift out and bumped MURAAQIB (FR), resulting in that horse becoming unbalanced. G Avranche had his license to ride in races suspended for two race meetings (Meydan 23.11.2017 & Al Ain 24.11.2017). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account G Avranche’s guilty plea, his riding record and deemed the interference to be in the mid range.
