NAFAQA (IRE) - (D O'Neill): On straightening, broke down resulting in its rider dismounting the gelding. Suffered a catastrophic injury to its right fore-leg resulting in the gelding being humanely euthanized. OSTAAD (IRE) - (J Crowley): Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the gelding, the rider explained that OSTAAD (IRE) was slow to begin and then traveled well throughout, however failed to quicken when put under pressure rounding the home turn. He added that over the concluding stages, the gelding did not feel comfortable in its action. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the right hind-leg. Trainer Mr D Watson was advised that prior to the gelding being entered to race again, he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for OSTAAD (IRE). TRIED AND TRUE (USA) - (P Dobbs): Slow to begin. RIO TIGRE (IRE) - (R Ffrench): Shifted out under pressure near the 300 metres. Severely checked near the 50 metres when tightened for room. NOLOHAY (IRE) - (P Cosgrave): Bumped on jumping. TRINITY FORCE (IRE) - (C O'Donoghue): Shifted out and away from another runner near the 300 metres. PHILOSOPHER (IRE) - (M Barzalona): Shifted out on jumping and bumped another runner. HANDSOME MAN (IRE) - (S De Sousa): Restrained when tightened for room near the 300 metres. General: Prior to correct weight, R Ffrench, rider of RIO TIGRE (IRE), (third place-getter) lodged an objection against the first place-getter JANSZOON (GB)(T O'Shea), alleging interference over the concluding stages. On the evidence and available footage it was established that JASZOON (GB) shifted in over the concluding stages and near the 50 metres RIO TIGRE (IRE) was tightened for room and had to be severely checked. Taking into account where the interference occurred and the margin between JANSZOON (GB) and RIO TIGRE (IRE) at the completion of the race, being 1½ lengths, the Stewards were not satisfied that had the interference not occurred to RIO TIGRE (IRE), he would have won the race. Accordingly the Stewards dismissed the objection and declared correct weight on the original placings. Stewards inquired into the reason for HANDSOME MAN (IRE)(S De Sousa) having to be restrained near the 300 metres. On the evidence and available footage it was established that near the 300 metres HANDSOME MAN (IRE), which had commenced to weaken was tightened for room between TRIED AND TRUE (USA)(P Dobbs) and TRINITY FORCE (IRE)(C O’Donoghue), which shifted out and away from RIO TIGRE (IRE)(R Ffrench), which shifted out under pressure, before being straightened by its rider. As the Stewards were of the view that no rider was at fault, they deemed this interference as a racing incident and advised all riders to exercise more care in a similar situation. Jockey T O’Shea (JANSZOON (GB)) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of ERA Rule 69(i) for permitting his mount to shift in over the concluding stages, resulting in RIO TIGRE (IRE) being tightened for room and having to be severely checked. T O’Shea had his license to ride in races suspended for 3 race meetings (Sharjah 13.1.18, Abu Dhabi 14.1.18 & Meydan 18.1.18). In assessing penalty, Stewards took into account T O’Shea’s good careless riding record, the interference suffered to RIO TIGRE (IRE), which in the opinion of the Stewards would have been placed second had the interference not occurred and they deemed the interference to be in the mid-range.
