When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, the rider explained that ACTIVE SPIRIT (IRE) is best suited when leading and was unable to obtain that position today. He added that from the 1000 metres, ACTIVE SPIRIT commenced to give ground and made a respiratory noise. A post-race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities. ALABASTER (USA) - (P Cosgrave): On jumping, bounded and bumped another runner, losing ground. Travelled wide without cover for the majority of the race. BARREESH (IRE) - (L Morris): Shifted out on jumping and bumped another runner. CAPE BYRON (GB) - (A Atzeni): Over-raced in the early stages. EARNSHAW (USA) - (M Barzalona): Shifted out on jumping and bumped another runner. Held up for a clear run rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. EMOTIONLESS (IRE) - (J Doyle): Bumped on jumping. TANNAAF (IRE) - (B Doyle): Slow to begin. Eased out of the race from the 1200 metres. Rider explained that as the horse lost its action behind on two occasions, he felt that something may be amiss and retired TANNAAF (IRE) from the event. TANNAAF (IRE) was transported to the Dubai Equine Hospital for further veterinary assessment. A subsequent report revealed that TANNAAF (IRE) had a suspected fracture to its pelvis. Trainer Mr R Bouresly was advised that prior to the horse being entered to race again, he must provide a veterinary certificate of fitness for TANNAAF (IRE). SANSHAAWES (SAF) - (C O'Donoghue): Steadied on straightening when momentarily tightened for room. BASATEEN (IRE) - (J Crowley): Bumped on jumping. GOOD TRIP (IRE) - (T O'Shea): Shifted in on jumping and bumped another runner. Checked when tightened for room near the 1600 metres. Travelled wide without cover in the early stages. LINGUISTIC (IRE) - (R Ffrench): Slow to begin. Race keen in the early stages. LIGHT THE LIGHTS (SAF) - (C Soumillon): Was momentarily held up for clear running on straightening. General: Stewards inquired into the reason for GOOD TRIP (IRE)(T O’Shea) having to be checked near the 1600 metres. Following the inquiry Jockey R Mullen (FARRIER (USA)) was charged under the provision of ERA Rule 69(i) for careless riding, in that near the 1600 metres he shifted in tightening LINGUISTIC (IRE)(R Ffrench) onto GOOD TRIP (IRE), which had to be checked. R Mullen pleaded not guilty to the charge and after taking further evidence, the Stewards could not be satisfied that the charge could be sustained and therefore found R Mullen not guilty. Stewards noted the racing manners of LINGUISTIC (IRE), which was racing keen as a contributing factor to the interference. Both R Mullen and R Ffrench were advised that in future they must make a greater effort to prevent their horses from shifting ground in a similar situation.

AKEED CHAMPION (GB) - (R Mullen): Bumped on jumping. General: Jockey P Smullen (REHANA (IRE)) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under the provisions of ERA Rule 69(i), for allowing his mount to shift in near the 1000 metres resulting in NOAH FROM GOA (SAF)(C Soumillon) being tightened for room and having to be checked and STEADY PACE (P Cosgrave), which was following also having to be checked off the heels of NOAH FROM GOA (SAF). P Smullen had his license to ride in races suspended for 2 race-meetings (20.1.18 Meydan & 21.1.18 Abu Dhabi). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account P Smullen’s excellent careless riding record whilst riding in the UAE and deemed the carelessness to be in the low range, given the minor shift on his behalf. Jockey W Buick (D'BAI (IRE)) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under the provisions of ERA Rule 69(i), for shifting ground inwards near the 300 metres, thereby bumping and tightening SALATEEN (GB)(S De Sousa) onto FLY AT DAWN (USA)(A Atzeni), who had to be restrained when tightened for room. W Buick had his license to ride in races suspended for 2 race-meetings (20.1.18 Meydan & 21.1.18 Abu Dhabi). In assessing penalty Stewards took into account W Buick’s guilty plea, good careless riding record and deemed the interference to be in the mid-range.

ZAMAAM (GB) - (J Crowley): Raced keen during the middle stages. REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (IRE) - (M Barzalona): Slow to begin. From the 1700 metres until the 1400 metres was held tight and raced in restricted room, eventually having to be checked when tightened for room. EMPOLI (GER) - (S Hitchcott): Travelled wide without cover in the early part of the race and allowed to stride forward to take up a leading position. GOLD STAR (GB) - (A Fresu): Slow to begin. Shortly after the start had to be steadied when tightened for room. Lay in under pressure in the straight. MIDNIGHT CHICA (USA) - (P Sirigu): Raced wide without cover during the middles stages of the race. From the 700 metres commenced to weaken. BUSKER (USA) - (C Beasley): Slow to begin. General: Stewards inquired into the reason for REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (IRE)(M Barzalona) having to be checked near the 1400 metres. On the evidence and available footage it was established that REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (IRE) had established its racing position on the fence passing the 2000 metres, however passing the 1700 metres had commenced to receive tightening form his outside from ZAMAAM (GB)(J Crowley), which was racing keen and receiving pressure from the rest of the field, which had commenced to shift inwards. REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (IRE) raced in restricted room before eventually being checked when tightened for room near the 1400 metres. As the Stewards could not attribute blame to anyone rider, no action was taken, however it was noted that there was sufficient room for REMBRANDT VAN RIJN (IRE) during the middle stages and he was entitled to hold his position. Trainer Mr N Caullery (GOLDEN WOOD (FR)) was fined AED 1000 under the provisions of ERA Rule 65(ii) for being the person at fault for Jockey C Soumillon weighing in overweight, due to adding extra padding to his equipment.
